A message from Melanie, Head Wreck
Here we ago again. The last email I sent concerned the passing of Wreck Jerry Cunningham.
Now I have news about his wife, former Wrecks Queen Bobbi. Bobbi had a fall and broke her hip. She’s had surgery and a few days ago was released to Bay Breeze Senior Living and Rehab Center, 3387 Gulf Breeze Parkway, east of Gulf Breeze. Please remember her in your prayers and visit her if you have a chance. Medicaid covers her room, but not “extras.” If you’d like to send a gift for Bobbi you can mail a check made out to Barbara Cunningham to her attorney, Roger Dutrimble, 1402 Aggie Way, Pensacola 32504-6272.
In the meantime, the Wrecks board continues to meet every couple of weeks as we make plans for the most normal Mardi Gras season we can manage. We have scheduled the big events: Ball, Champagne Breakfast, Kings Supper, and Queens Dinner, and now are working on the Parade.
Our traditional first meeting is the final Monday before Halloween in October. Write us on your schedule, Sabine Sandbar, October 25. This is a tentative date. We’ll keep you informed.
The 2021-22 Mardi Gras season will be a different one. We will advise you of Covid protocols, and continuously monitor the status of the pandemic. If the situation allows it, we will hold our Monday meetings, but we will make decisions on those a month at a time.
The meetings themselves will have significant differences. We may ask you to RSVP to our weekly emails so we can get a head count of attendees.
Most likely there will be no more buffet hors d’oeuvres, and food may or may not be furnished by the venues we visit. One option is limited menu items that we can purchase at special prices. If establishments are unable to provide food, we will have a plan for that too. We won’t let you go home dry and empty.
The Beach establishments have been hit hard by this extended Covid epidemic, by the long bridge closure, and by the continuing shortage of staff, from bartenders to servers to chefs.
One purpose for founding the Wrecks was to bring business to the Beach establishments in the off-season. If ever those establishments needed our business, it is now.
The beginning of Mardi Gras season gets closer and closer. Can’t wait to see you all again!
Melanie, Head Wreck
